||: Introduction :||

There are many forms of protection for one's household based on any individual's religion and practices. While no practice is superior to another, it helps to learn and understand some practices related to your own beliefs.

In this case, I will explore a Wiccan practice that involves creating a protection spell that aims to negate negative energies, nightmares, and hopefully negative people in your life as well.

This blog article aims to explain how to make black salt, the benefits of each herb used so you are free to tailor your own black salt to suit your own needs and needs you aim to manifest with the salt, how the salt could be used, and some historical background related to the belief and practice.

Should you want to try this at home, try not to set your house on fire, and maybe cover your fire alarm for less inconvenience during the process of making your own Black Salt, I would suggest making the Black Salt inside your chosen space, as the smoke used to make it helps with expanding the protection spell. Just leave the windows open during the creation process and you should be set.

||: Ingredients :||

Main Requirements:

  • Cast Iron Cauldron/ any fire-safe vessel

  • Charcoal: used to banish, heal, and protect

  • Salt (sea salt is usually used, but you could use store-bought black salt as well)

Optionally add for specific effects:

  • Rue: breaks curses, hexes, bad luck

  • Rosemerry: purifies space

  • Mugwort: purifying incense

  • Sage: cleansing negative energies (most used for negative energy)

  • Frankincense: purifier usually used to cleanse a sacred space

  • Written intentions on paper to manifest specific affirmations.

||: Method :||

  • Begin by making sure your smoke alarm will not cause any disturbances during this process. This won’t affect the spell in any way, but the smoke would help purify the space and thus might cause some disturbances like the times you are cooking in your kitchen.

  • Burn charcoal and break it into pieces should you want an easier, more time-efficient process, then add the additional herbs while burning.

  • Pound the charcoal with a motor & pestle while burning.

  • Add salt and mix well until it becomes a dark grey/ black color

  • For written intentions, write on a flammable paper, and burn over the cauldron. Mix the ashes well in the cauldron.

  • Place in a jar of choice using a fennel unless you are welcome to additional cleaning up

||: Benefits & Uses :||

Please do not eat the salt, it's not edible. It is instead noted that keeping the salt in the house helps with absorbing the negative energies all around us, but specific uses of the salt could be used in specific ways depending on your chosen area of focus, such as dream protecting, protecting a location, or rinsing off negative energies from people or objects.

Leaving it beside your bed: The salt absorbs negative energies you carry and would theoretically reduce nightmares. You could keep it in the jar next to your bed, or sprinkle some salt under your pillow for more directed effects of dealing with nightmares

Sprinkle along your windowsills and along the doors: Similar effects as ‘unicorn hair’ used in Gravity Falls, the salt is used to protect your house by keeping negative energies outside

Sprinkle and sweep on your floor: Sprinkle and spread out evenly across your floors to enhance protection inside the house

Mix in water and spray in your house: Water in witchcraft relates to purifying, so mixing the salt with water could be used to spray on objects and people to cleanse off negative energies. If you would like to spray on people or animals, just avoid the eyes, or wounds as salt could be painful for such areas.

||: Discarding :||

Should you want the option of discarding the salt as you would not want to keep an overwhelming amount of absorbed negative energy in your home, then listed below are options available to further protect your place.

Bury in your garden: aimed to discard any negative energies away from your house, but salt does kill plants, so it is advised to bury the salt in a container

Scatter the salt in the wind: discarding it this way involves you to allow the wind to blow away the absorbed negative energies

Sprinkle the salt in a body of water: this method allows water to wash away the negative energy absorbed by the salt.

||: Background :||

Now that you have learned some uses and what each aspect of the spell is believed to achieve, I would like to explore some historical aspects as to where such beliefs come from. In general the origins are relatively unclear, but it is most notably involved in wiccan practices.

Salt was historically a precious source for the rich people to afford as salt was difficult to process and gain. In a spiritual sense, salt has appeared in the Old Testament where God punishes a woman by turning her into salt due to disobeying the commandments as one example (Wigington). Black Salt originates from Wiccans, voodoo practices, and witchcraft in general.

It is believed that salt is a solid purification agent and repellent of evil energies due to being connected to earth magic as proven through the historical labor to gain such resources as well as gaining such a product from the earth. Earth magic is typically linked with protection as the earth provides pure and natural resources for humanity.

||: Conclusion :||

The process of making Black Salt involves traditional spiritual beliefs and has been tailored through modern resources as civilization has created modern tools and more accessible resources that could help in making the spell effective. Black Salt is a purification and protection spell due to utilizing the earth's resources by combining aspects from nature. The spell is believed to absorb negative energies, nightmares, and draining emotions, by then it is encouraged for you to dispose of the salt after utilizing it based on your own choosing.

While I believe that the spell would be effective for anyone regardless if they practice witchcraft or not, the religious beliefs related to salt all seem to agree that salt is a beneficial purification tool used for traditional and modern practices thus proving some form of legitimacy regarding the uses of salt in a spiritual use.
