||: Introduction :||

Interested in pursuing a ghost-hunting hobby/business, but don't know where to start?

This blog article aims to provide a variety of tools that one might come across in a ghost-hunting event. You might find some of the items listed, but not all of them would be used as some ghost-hunting businesses, in video games such as "Phasmophobia" or "Demonologist", or in tv shows and movies like "28 Days Haunted" or "The Conjuring Series".

As many other disciplines require different tools to efficiently perform their jobs, ghost hunting requires people to find answers using equipment to help them see what can not be seen, record what could be heard, and explore places in the dark.

Through this blog, I will attempt to briefly explore the basic functions of these tools and how they help paranormal investigators.

While the ghost is for the most part invisible, some equipment helps people see and record occurrences that would potentially need more exploring as paranormal researchers should explore occurrences with an open mind. To help them with their research, the investigators might use a handful of the items.

As investigators, it is ideal to record any possible evidence you may find, which would include tracing movements, and seeing if it would be ghost related or simply just a gust of wind.

These tools are typically used to see in the dark, take pictures in the dark, or simply make a record of what ghosts potentially look like in real life.

List of equipment included and a brief description:

  • Digital & Hi-8 Video Cameras- camera for recording video footage

  • Thermal Imager- used to check temperatures on a visual scale

  • Digital Camera- used for recording photographs

  • Night Vision Scope- a tool used to help the naked eye see in the dark

  • Visible Light Meter- used to measure light

  • External Flash- camera flash that is not initially built into the cameras

In a general sense, EMF equipment is used to detect electric and magnetic fields, which is useful to paranormal investigators as it is common to theorize that ghosts can manipulate such fields, even to a minor extent. To find ulterior meanings as to why lights flicker, or your car won't start, paranormal researchers use these tools to explain why certain objects are suddenly affected in places where ghost activities might be occurring.

Investigators need to test these theories by measuring how far electric equipment would be affected by a ghost's presence.

By testing this theory of how a ghost can affect electric machinery, and recording their findings, investigators could gain an upper hand in finding proof that ghosts exist even if they would be nothing like we love to see in horror films.

List of equipment included and a brief description:

  • DSP-523 Power lines Filtering EMF Meter- used to accurately notch powerline fields

  • MT-263 AC EMF Meter- tells you which axis has the highest field strength

  • Multi-Detector II Profi- finds current-carrying cables, metals components, wooden beams & cavities

  • TriField Natural Meter- detects AC three types of EMF pollutions

  • Gauss Master EMF- measures the level of ELF magnetic field radiation from power lines

  • Pen EMF Meter- pen-shaped detector for areas or items that exceed the standard radiation level of any given environments

  • Frequency Generator- measures the effect humans have on chemicals through sound waves or bio-frequencies

  • E.L.F Zone Meter- measures electromagnetic fields with extremely low frequencies (ELF)

  • Electro Sensor- electric detectors that convert light into an electronic signal

As most people might not be able to see ghosts easily, hearing voices or random knocks that seemingly come out of nowhere should be useful for paranormal investigators to consider exploring. Recording sounds that might be hard to explain would be helpful to provide a form of proof using various options of using modern technology.

Investigators would find some importance in recording sounds that are made and would then determine if the paranormal activities are authentic or if they are paranoid. While you can gain validation from other researchers in the room, it is better evidence, in the long run, to use equipment to record instead of taking people's word for it.

Investigators get to prove or discover the origins of sounds made in a paranormal environment, and then research other possible evidence of such proof through testing suspicions, and finding unrelated problems (such as building creaks instead of ghost activities) but would still be grateful to discover answers regardless.

List of equipment included and a brief description:

  • Digital Recorder- captures vocalizations

  • 4 Track Recorder- recorder that has four distinct stripes on the tape

  • Analog Tape Recorder- records and plays back sound using magnetism

  • External Microphones & Stands- microphones outside of a computer

||: Atmospheric Equipment :||

To explore the theory of ghosts being able to manipulate the temperature of locations, researchers would benefit from using gadgets that measure the environment around them based on humidity and drastic changes in temperatures in a haunted location.

The theory to measure the ranges of temperatures comes from a superstition that ghosts can manipulate the atmosphere to be colder, as such investigators would use temperature changes as potential proof of ghosts being able to manipulate the environment simply by being present.

Investigators use these tools as a means to determine if ghosts change the temperature, while also keeping in mind how the atmosphere also changes based on a location, time of the night, or sudden weather changes that were not according to the weather forecast on the news. Regardless of other factors, it is useful to test the theory and measure paranormal activity based on ghosts being able to change the environment they choose to haunt.

List of equipment included and a brief description:

  • Digital Temperature & Humidity Gauge- measures temperatures and humidity of an environment

  • Digital Temperature Monitor- provides 9-bit temperature readings

  • Negative Ion Generator- uses high voltage to electrically charge air molecules

||: Miscellaneous Equipment :||

For the most part, these tools do not fall into a specific category for paranormal researchers, but they do help in a great way, and most paranormal researchers should consider using these tools.

These tools include electronics that do not necessarily fall into specific categories in a ghost hunt, but you should consider looking into using these tools if you would like to gain additional information or proof of paranormal activities.

The miscellaneous equipment would help investigators to gain further proof of paranormal activity, further based on seeing in through the dark location, or further testing theories based on ghosts manipulating the environment, electricity, or simply moving around in a location.

List of equipment included and a brief description:

  • Flashlights- small battery-operated portable electric light

  • Motion Detectors- a device to detect and measure movement

  • Radio Frequency Counter- used to measure pulses per second in a periodic electronic signal

||: Conclusion :||

While many tools help a paranormal researcher explore many aspects of theories related to ghosts, investigators typically work under different methods but they might consider using these tools to test these scientific theories might it be through ghost hunting events, or just researching for the sake of science, these tools are known to test out the authenticity of paranormal sites or just to prove that people are just paranoid and superstitious of paranormal activities in their own homes.

The main takeaway from this article is to consider what tools might be used to explore what ghost looks like, how they affect electricity and magnetic waves, sounds made in a location, and the effect ghosts have on the atmospheric environment to help investigators understand more about ghosts and to test their theories.
